President Dr. Joyce Banda confident of new mandate
President Dr. Joyce Banda on Friday told thousands of people who converged at Mdika Primary School ground in Dowa that she has no reason to rig elections because she has a solid track record which will see her win the forthcoming tripartite elections.
The President was speaking after presiding over the switching on of electricity at Kayembe Trading Centre in Traditional Authority Kayembe in the district under the Malawi Rural Electrification Programme.
She told the gathering that she is committed as leader of Malawi to ensure that the rural poor people have good living standards.
“I have built houses for the needy, we brought safe and potable water to several communities in the country; we have distributed several cows to the poor.
“We have done such projects and several others for the benefit of Malawians and why would I rig elections,” the President wondered.
Dr. Banda also reminded Malawians at the ground of the significant transformation of lives for the better in the country.
“When I took over as president of Malawi you know there were several challenges like shortage of fuel and foreign exchange (forex). The import cover was at one week while my Government has improved that to about three months at the moment and we have plenty of fuel,” she stressed.
The President also promised Malawians that she would continue to fight for their well being.
“I will continue to build houses for the poor; I will continue to distribute cows for families and in particular to help the poor people of this country,” said Dr Banda.
She then told the gathering that candidates who have a proven track record like hers have no reason to cheat in an election.
“With all these achievements during two years of my leadership why would I want to cheat in the tripartite elections?
“Even in schools, brilliant students who always come top in their class have no reason to cheat. It is the ones with challenges that carry reference materials (likassa) during examinations” she said.
Banda then asked the people of Malawi to be the judge on May 20, 2014, at the end of the tripartite elections exercise.
“My fellow Malawians you know what I have done for this country. I have come here to ask for your vote. If you want the programmes we have been doing for the people of Malawi like the ones I have mentioned to continue, vote for me and your son Sosten Gwengwe,” she said.
